WITCH BALLS
 

 
The Legend of the Witch Ball is that they were hung in the window for protection against evil spells and negativity. It is said that the negative spirits are attracted by the mesmerizing swirls of color of the orbs.  Gazing into their depths the spirits become entangled trapping their negative energy inside the glass.
Hung in the window or about the neck, these glass Witch Balls trap the negative energy and prevent evil spirits from affecting the work or home environment.
Glass witch balls and beads are made by winding molten glass around narrow stainless steel rods called mandrels. The glass bead is held in the flame of a torch and layered with different colors of glass then manipulated in many ways.  When the bead is removed from the mandrel, the hole is left for stringing. To prevent cracking the bead must be annealed and cooled slowly in a kiln, where the temperatures are closely regulated.  This is called annealing, which takes several hours to bring the bead to room temperature.  This produces a bead or ball with less stress so they are less likely to crack.
